William Schonfeld, the former Dean of the School of Social Sciences, has stepped down from his position as Director of the Center for the Study of Democracy. The new Director is another scholar who has long been associated with UCI, Professor Bernard Grofman. At the same time as his assuming his new CSD responsibilities, Professor Grofman was named the inaugural Jack Peltason (Bren Foundation) Chair. This Chair is named in honor of a leading legal scholar, and a marvelous human being, who not only was President of the University California system and Chancellor of UCI, but who is a founding member of CSD and who still serves as the Emeritus Chair of its Community Leadership Council. Helping facilitate the creation of the Peltason Chair was one of Willie's many lasting contributions to the development of the social sciences at UCI. Willie's competence, good humor and unflappability will be much missed from the CSD office. However, we are glad to note that he left his desk and stuffed chairs behind. |
