The Center for the Study of Democracy draws its primary faculty membership from the Departments of Political Science, Sociology, and Economics. In conjunction with the Department of Political Science, CSD has long run the annual Harry H. Eckstein Lecture (whose speaker last year was professor Ronald Inglehart). In conjunction with the Department of Economics (and with sponsorship from City National Bank) we have also been running the annual Economics of Governance Lecture (whose last speaker was Janet Yellen, director of the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco).
To complete this set, and with the enthusiastic cooperation of professor Wang Feng (department chair) and a number of other sociologists, January 29, 2009 will be the date of the first annual Robin M. Williams, Jr. Lecture - run by CSD in conjunction with the Department of Sociology. Professor Williams was a much beloved person in the School of Social Sciences -- a past president of the American Sociological Association who spent much of his later career at UCI.
To kick off this event (and as a signal of the cooperation between the Departments of Political Science and Sociology in the area of race and ethnicity graduate courses) there will be two Robin Williams Lecturers: Dianne Pinderhughes, the current president of the American Political Science Association, and Troy Duster, a past president of the American Sociological Association. These two distinguished scholars will share the podium to talk about "Race in America." Both have been designated as Chancellor's Distinguished Lecturers. |
