Title: Orange County Supervisor Janet Nguyen comes to UCI

Date Entered: 2008-11-12  Details: Member of the OC County Board of Supervisors, Janet Nguyen, visited UCI on October 30 as the first speaker in CSD's new series of "Coffee with ... OC elected officials." Supervisor Nguyen, who is a UCI alum, is the first Vietnamese-American member of the County Board of Supervisors and one of only a handful of women who have ever served on the Board. Born in Vietnam, hers is a very inspiring story. In her opening remarks, while emphasizing the positive aspects of community service, Superisor Nguyen also detailed some of the barriers that persist against women succeeding in political careers -- barriers which may be especially strong in more traditional communities.
