15th district Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan engaged in an informal discussion with graduate students and professors at UCI on January 27, 2009, under the auspices of the Center for the Study of Democracy's "Coffee with ..." series. The dialogue revolved around the importance of education in California, and why both funding and student perforance have declined over the course of the previous three decades. In spite of her grim assessment of the future of education in California, Assemblywomen Buchanan, a self-identified "eternal optimist," offered several policy solutions. Drawing from her previous experience as president of the San Ramon Valley School Board, Buchanan discussed several ways to improve the performance of California schools, including increasing the training available to teachers, better integrating the results of educational research and new learning tools into the classroom, and bringing back more local control of school district funding, thus permitting a more direct accountability of those who give money for the results achieved. |
