Details: The Center for the Study of Democracy, University of California, Irvine is pleased to announce the fifth annual graduate student conference on democracy.

The general theme is Democracy and Its Development. The specific theme this year is "Race, Ethnicity, Religion and Gender." Reports on U.S. based as well as comparative and cross-national research are welcome.  
 
Doctoral students from California universities are invited to send their project proposals on research related to race, religion, gender and democracy, here and abroad, such as:  
 
-Political Participation  
-The 2008 U.S. Elections  
-Religion and Politics in Comparative Perspective  
-Gender and Politics in Comparative Perspective  
-Race and Politics in Comparative Perspective  
 
The conference to be held on the UCI campus, on Saturday, May 9, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and will provide an excellent venue for doctoral students to receive expert guidance on projects on democracy-related topics. Faculty from UCI and other California universities will serve as discussants. In addition, we anticipate electronic publication of the best papers from the conference by the University of California's eRepository.  
 
How to submit a proposal?  
 
To submit a paper proposal for potential inclusion in this conference, please e-mail a one page abstract (300 words) by March 15, 2009 to Sheila Hayden, (snhayden@uci.edu). Please include a one paragraph biography, the name and e-mail of a faculty member familiar with the proposed research, and a brief statement of the current research progress on the proposed paper (e.g. completed data collection, finished with analysis, completed first full draft).  
 
The participants in the program will be notified by April 1, 2009; completed papers should be submitted electronically by April 10, 2009 for distribution to participants by posting on the CSD website.  
 
The conference is hosted by Louis DeSipio (Political Science), Belinda Robnett-Olsen (Sociology), and graduate students Kris Coulter and Chris Stout. UCI's Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) is funding and administering the conference.
