Visiting Research Fellows

The Center for the Study of Democracy hosts a Visiting Fellows program for scholars who are engaged in research on the democratic process. Each year we are joined by three to four scholars per quarter, most coming from outside the United States. These Research Fellows participate in the research and educational activities of the Center, with junior research scholars given the opportunity to audit courses taught by CSD faculty.  All Research Fellows are given office space and access to the UCI library and computer support network and are invited to all of CSD's many research events.. And we offer assistance in finding housing.  Visitor stays normally range from one month to one year, with the mode being three months.  Unfortunately, direct funding for visitors is not available, so all funding for living costs must be provided by the home university or home country.

If you are interested in being considered for selection as a CSD Visiting Research Fellow at the University of California, Irvine, you must apply six months to two years in advance --the further in advance you apply the more likely you are to be chosen, since facilities to host visitors are limited. Applications should be sent to the Center Administrator, Sheila Hayden, SNHayden@uci.edu.  Applications should indicate how you plan to spend your time at UCI and also indicate the source of funding for your stay.  Pre-doctoral, junior, and senior scholars are eligible. Fluency in English is a requirement.

To become a CSD Research Fellow you must be sponsored by one or more of the more than forty members of CSD. Thus, it is highly desirable that you contact in advance CSD faculty who might be willing to serve as your sponsor.  Names proposed for Research Fellows are first circulated to all relevant CSD Faculty. The applications of those that achieve faculty sponsorship are reviewed by the CSD Director. Priority conflicts might then be decided by the CSD Executive Committee. We anticipate being able to inform any applicant of a decision within two months of their application.
